What is a timing belt?
The timing belt is the component that keeps the engine’s valves and pistons in synchronisation, it helps control the camshafts in your engine and keeps the entire operation running smoothly.
What signs are there that the belt needs replacing?
Check for fraying, cracks or other signs of deterioration. Check for correct belt tension. If the belt appears loose, have an automotive technician make the necessary adjustments; especially in newer cars.
Would there be any warning before the belt breaks?
The simple answer is no. Engine manufacturers recommended replacement of the timing belt based on the age of the part and kilometres travelled. As a rough idea, this would be no more than five years or 100,000 kilometres – whichever occurs first. This will vary according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
