What checks can I carry out?
You can check the radiator coolant level when your vehicle is cold. Coolant level should be high when your vehicle is hot and low when your vehicle is cold. You can also check the seal on the radiator cap and for evidence of sludge build-up on the underneath of the cap and in the neck of the radiator. Another check is for the presence of leaks which are highlighted by the presence of water or water staining. Be sure to also examine the radiator and heater hoses for signs of deterioration, leakage, softening and loose clamps.
Why do vehicles have coolant/antifreeze in the engine?
The radiator in your vehicle cools your engine and needs water and coolant (antifreeze) to function. It also helps prevent corrosion of internal components in the cooling system.
What happens if there is no coolant/antifreeze in the system?
What will happen is that rust and corrosion will appear in the cooling system. In the long term, this will reduce the life of the cooling system’s components such as the radiator, water pump and coolant hoses. This could also lead to the failure of cylinder head gaskets and other engine damage.
How often should the coolant/antifreeze be changed?
When there is visible rust in the coolant system or the cooling system test is low on antifreeze or anticorrosive. Most manufacturers recommend a two year interval.
